The so called troubled states are never as evil as they’re made out to be. My wife and I arrived in Pakistan last year when that YouTube video “Innocence of Muslims” sparked riots in the street. And yet everybody was as nice as can be. They’d say, “What are you doing here? Welcome to Pakistan.” As an individual, you get entirely different treatment. There are a lot of countries that do not get many visitors, and they’re very, very pleased when somebody does make the effort to go there.

Ich habe eine Erkenntnis mitgebracht von meinen Reisen: Es ist scheiße, dass alles so gleichgemacht wird, sei es durch Konzerne oder durch europäisches Einheitsdenken. Wir sind nicht alle gleich: Im Süden essen sie erst um Mitternacht, wir Nordeuropäer wünschen uns ein bisschen Abstand zwischen den Menschen und küssen uns nicht immer gleich. … Und dann der Euro! Es sagt ja auch was über die Seele des Landes aus, wenn ich in Italien mit einem Haufen Lire für einen Cappuccino bezahle. … Eigentlich war genau die Anfangsidee von Europa richtig, finde ich: die Römischen Verträge, die EWG. Ich glaube, ich mache mir demnächst ein T-Shirt: »Zurück zur EWG«.
